Which duvet weight should I choose?

WOOL DUVETS

Both a Lightweight (300gsm) and Medium Weight (600gsm) weight version is available separately.  Each duvet has ties attached to enable two duvets of the same size to be tied together providing maximum flexibility.

By fastening one of each weight together, you can make a substantial  (900gsm) weight duvet to keep you cosy in the very cold Winter months.  As natural wool works uniquely, we recommend that you try one weight before purchasing two duvets as you may very well find that one weight is suitable for you all year round and you may not need to purchase a second one.

In view of wools' ability to insulate your body, yet release excess heat, any tog comparisons are wide-ranging and unique to you depending upon your natural body temperature and your room temperature.   As an indication we can provide the following guidelines:

Weight GSM* - TOG Equivalent

Lightweight  300gsm - 4-7 tog

Medium Weight 600gsm - 8-14 tog

*grams of wool per square metre

To choose a duvet, you need to consider how warm you are as a person whilst sleeping and how warm your room is. If you are a warm person, or have heat flushes during the night, you should find that the Lightweight is the ideal weight for you all year round.  If you are a chilly person, then the Medium Weight should suit you the whole year round.

You also need to consider how warm your room is. If you sleep in a heated room, then the Lightweight would be adequate for you. However, if you sleep in an unheated room, the Medium Weight would be a sensible choice.

Each of our duvets is individually handcrafted with love and care by our seamstresses at our Devon-based workshops. You can choose from a range of natural, sustainable fillings and in a selection of weights.

We'll start with a quick explanation about togs. These were devised to denote the insulation factor of a duvet and so for feather, feather and down and, particularly, synthetic duvets this is 'fixed' because they can only insulate but as they are not fully breathable are unable to temperature regulate. However, our duvet fillings don't just insulate...they are breathable so can work with you and the ambient temperature of your bedroom, to help keep your core body temperature more balanced whilst you sleep. This means you are less likely to wake up feeling too hot or too cold. So, whether you want a duvet from our British wool, British alpaca or Botanic (100% plant based) range, they are all breathable and temperature regulating, with the ability to retain heat or to release it as required. In other words, because of this ability our duvets have a fluctuating tog equivalency, rather than the fixed tog rating you may be used to with other types of fillings.

All our duvets are also naturally resistant to dust mites and this makes them a great option for those who experience asthma as a result of dust mite allergens

Our 100% British wool duvets

Our wool duvets are available in a Lightweight (300gsm) option, a Medium Weight (600gsm) option and our very substantial Extra Warm Winter Weight (900gsm) option.

In view of wool's ability to insulate your body, yet release excess heat, any tog comparisons are wide-ranging and unique to you depending upon your natural body temperature and your room temperature.   As an indication we can provide the following guidelines:

Weight GSM* - TOG Equivalent

*grams of wool per square metre

  • Lightweight Wool Duvet 300gsm: This has a fluctuating tog equivalency of 4 - 7 togs, which means it can retain heat up to the equivalent of a 7 tog duvet but can also release heat down to a tog equivalency of approximately 4 togs. This duvet has one layer of wool inside and so is suitable for the warmer months of the year - or those who are 'hot' sleepers and may want something cooler year-round. Also, if you live in a well insulated building in a warmer part of the UK this duvet may also be the right one for you.
  • Medium Weight Wool Duvet 600gsm: Suitable for most of the year and for those who still want something a bit warmer in the summer, this duvet has a fluctuating tog equivalency of 8 - 14 togs. That makes it cosy for the winter and a bit cooler in the warmer months. This is our most popular weight of duvet and many of our customers find that this duvet is suitable from Autumn right through Winter and into Spring. It's also a good duvet for those who live in slightly cooler parts of the UK or whose bedrooms might not be well insulated - even in Summer.
  • Extra Warm Winter Weight 900gsm: This is our most substantial duvet - it is quite physically weighty as well as having a tog rating that starts at 14 plus togs and can retain heat up to around 18 togs. Customers who live in a particularly cold part of the UK, or who prefer a cold bedroom for sleeping -  or who really feel the cold, are likely to benefit from the extra togs that come with this duvet.
  • Our Lightweight and Medium Weight duvets come with ties, so if you decide to tie two duvets together to top up on the togs, then you have the flexibility to do this. Alternatively, you can purchase our All Seasons Set, which comprises one lightweight wool duvet and one medium weight wool duvet in the size of your choice - and by purchasing them this way you make a bit of a saving over buying them as separate items. This allows you to use the lightweight duvet in summer, the medium weight duvet in the cooler months - but you can also tie the two together. This gives you the ultimate flexibility for seasonal changes.

Our 100% Alpaca duvets

Light and luxurious, our alpaca duvets come in two weights. The same principle regarding fluctuating tog ratings applies to alpaca but they are slightly lower than for our British wool duvets.

Weight GSM* - TOG equivalent

*grams of alpaca per square metre

  • Lightweight Alpaca Duvet 200gsm: This has a fluctuating tog eqivalency of 3 - 6 togs, making it a duvet for summer use, or for those 'hot' sleepers that need something a bit cooler from Spring through to early Autumn (before the chills set in). It is a physically light duvet and its slightly lower fluctuating tog rating makes it slightly cooler than our lightweight wool duvet.
  • Medium Weight Alpaca Duvet 400gsm: Slightly cooler than our medium weight wool duvet - but with a bit of extra warmth than our lightweight wool duvet, this duvet has a fluctuating tog equivalency of 7 - 10 togs. This duvet is likley to be suitable for a well insulated, warm room in the cooler months but would also be suitable for those who just need that little extra bit of warmth even in summer.

Our Botanic duvets

WEIGHT GSM* - TOG EQUIVALENT

*grams of Botanic per square metre

These are our 100% plant-based alternative to wool or alpaca duvets. Moisture wicking and breathable, this duvet range comes with a slightly lower tog fluctuation, and in three weights.

  • Ultralight Botanic Duvet 200gsm: The fluctuating tog equivalency of this duvet is 2 - 4 togs, making it suitable as a summer duvet. It might also be suitable for 'hot' sleepers in spring and autumn and also for those who live in heated, very well insulated bedrooms during less chilly winter months.
  • Lightweight Botanic Duvet 400gsm: With a fluctuating tog equivalency of 4 - 6 togs, this can be a good option for the warmer spring or early autumn nights, as well as for those who need just that little extra warmth in the summer months.
  • Medium Weight Botanic Duvet 600gsm: This has the 'highest' fluctuating tog equivalency in this range, 6 - 8 togs. Generally suitable in spring and autumn, it is also an option for 'hot' sleepers in winter.
