5 Ways To Refresh Your Bedroom For Spring

Spring is finally here and it’s the perfect time to refresh and renew. A spring makeover can blossom into the perfect sleep environment–so you can get more of the sleep you want and need. Ready to give your space a seasonal reset? If you don’t have the time or budget to completely revitalise your bedroom colours and décor, why not try these easy tips that can make a difference and help you to sleep better this Spring.

1. Freshen up your Bedding

Embrace the change of season: You could consider changing to a lighter duvet – especially one that’s made from wool. Wool is temperature regulating so as well as being able to release heat if you need to cool down a bit, it can also retain heat to keep those last few chillier mornings at bay.

Pillow Talk: Spring is also a good time to change your pillow. Feather pillows retain moisture and heat, which is the perfect environment for dust mites - but wool pillows are moisture wicking and naturally resistant to those pesky little creatures. Make sure you opt for a pillow that supports your neck and spine whilst you sleep.

Pure and Cool Cotton: Take a look at changing your bedlinen too as that might need a refresh. If you have been using brushed cotton or flannel sheets for the winter, then now is the time to change to something fresher and cooler - but make sure you pick pure cotton, as polycotton blends contain synthetic fibres that can trap heat.

Go to the mattresses: Spring cleaning is a great time to ensure your mattress is clean and protected. Gently vacuum your mattress with a hand-held vacuum to get rid of any dust before placing a protector over the top. A wool mattress protector will keep dust mites at bay and will also offer some temperature regulation.

Soften it up: If you’re finding your mattress a little on the hard side or have a memory foam mattress that is trapping too much heat, then this can be helped by using a wool mattress topper. It will add a layer of softness to your mattress and can also help to temperature regulate.

2. Light and Dark

Your body’s circadian rhythm, or internal clock, is affected by light. Take advantage of the longer daylight hours by letting natural light into your room in the morning. When you wake up, open your curtains and let the sunshine in! Conversely, in the evening, use blackout curtains to block out any remaining light – and that very early morning light - to create a darker sleeping space.

At night, consider using dimmable lights or a bedside lamp with a warm glow to signal to your body that it’s time to wind down. The blue light generated by TVs and devices can affect production of the sleep hormone, melatonin, so switch off the TV and put away devices at least 30 minutes before bedtime. If possible, try to leave devices out of the bedroom.

3. Aromatherapy Magic

Scents can have a powerful impact on helping your body relax for sleep. In a recent survey by the Sleep Foundation, 78% of adults said they felt more relaxed in bed if their bedroom has a fresh, pleasant scent. Consider using calming essential oils with scents like lavender or jasmine. Opt for natural essential oils, rather than the synthetically produced aromas in plug in or spray air fresheners. A lavender eye pillow can help you to relax, and a gentle meditation can help you to unwind in preparation for sleep.

4. Test the Temperature

A cool bedroom, ideally between 16 - 18°C, is the best temperature for sleep. Our body temperature needs to cool slightly, to trigger our bodies into sleep mode. An overly warm bedroom is likely to disrupt your sleep, so use a gentle fan or open your window to encourage air circulation. Discover more about temperature and sleep.

5. Keep it Quiet

A noisy room can make it hard to get your beauty sleep. Block out distractions with the right pair of earplugs and some of us find that we can get to sleep more easily if we have something that generates ‘white noise’, such as a fan. If outside noise is an issue, try adding heavier curtains or soundproofing your windows.
