This is traditionally the time of year when we ‘spring clean’; freshening up our homes and perhaps rolling up our sleeves for some decorating. In the UK, the term ‘spring clean’ is recorded first in the 19th century, when the warmer weather enabled people to open doors and window to air out their homes to get rid of dust and residue from coal stoves and fireplaces. However, it is likely to have been a task carried out further back in history, when wealthy landowners and the nobility would move to another of their properties, to allow the cleaning of the house where they had spent the winter.
Do other countries have a tradition for ‘Spring Cleaning’?
It’s not just a tradition in the UK, it’s also found in many other countries. For instance, the Jewish tradition of cleaning the house for Passover started thousands of years ago, back to the time of the earliest celebrations of the festival, to around the 5th century BCE. In preparation for this, the Torah commands not a crumb of leaven (yeast used to make bread rise) was left in the house. For Chinese New Year, early in the spring, it was and still is traditional to clean the house in preparation for the celebrations. The Persian (and Iranian, and Zoroastrian) holiday known as ‘Nowruz’ falls on the first day of spring, but before the celebrations begin there is a spring cleaning ritual known as Khaneh-Tekani (literally, ‘shaking house’), whereby the whole family joins to clean the entire house and may also burn incense or herbs to cleanse the air.

What makes Devon Duvets wool bedding so special?
At Devon Duvets, we’re an award-winning family run business that expertly individually handcrafts beautiful British wool bedding, from start to finish, at our workshops on the edge of Dartmoor. We’re committed to supporting British sheep farmers, so gather our wool from live sheep owned by local farmers we know love their flocks. Our wool is then especially washed and prepared for us in traditional British mills, and we do not use any chemicals – better for you and the environment.
